Contemporary life, with its diverse development across the natural sciences, the humanities, and other fields, has created a turning point whose clear influence has affected the vocabulary of life in all its details, including writers and authors, and consequently literature and writing. Several factors stand at the forefront of this transformation, including social, cultural, and technological developments. If life itself is accelerating and changing rapidly, there may be a tendency to present literary texts in a more condensed form or in ways more suitable to limited time. For example, flash fiction may become a more common form in the coming stage because it allows the presentation of powerful and concentrated stories in a short time. The same applies to the short novel.
With the development of communication technologies and the expansion of social media platforms in all their forms, this may influence the way flash stories, short novels, and even flash poetry and the Arabic haiku are presented. There may be greater interest in brief and concise texts that can be read quickly through digital media, or while traveling to another city.
Nevertheless, it should be noted that there is space for the short novel, flash fiction, and other literary forms previously mentioned. The choices made by writers and authors depend on their artistic style and the vision they wish to express. There may also be a trend toward diversity and the use of different literary forms in order to accommodate a varied audience and to express diverse experiences in writing.
In general, the prevailing literary trend reflects an interaction between various social, cultural, and technological factors, and it may change over time due to the development and accelerating rhythm of life.
It cannot be stated with absolute clarity that this is the age of the novel or the age of the short story. This may be related to contemporary literary trends and the preferences of readers and writers during a particular period. At times there may be greater preference for the short novel, flash fiction, flash poetry, or the condensed Arabic haiku, depending on a variety of factors such as social, cultural, and political circumstances.
Therefore, the tendency among some writers to reduce or condense long narrative, fictional, and poetic texts and to shift toward the short novel and flash fiction arises from several factors.
The first hypothesis and question: why do readers turn to short texts such as the short novel, short story, flash fiction, or flash poetry?
- The development and acceleration of life: With technological progress, increasing discoveries, expanding means of communication, and the abundance of information, life has become faster and more intense. Readers may find it difficult to commit to lengthy works and may therefore prefer shorter and more focused texts.
In our current age, people live fast-paced lives filled with information and rapid technological transformations. This may affect their engagement with reading, as they may have less time to enjoy lengthy texts. Therefore, there may be a tendency toward shorter texts that better suit their lifestyle.
- The spread of social media: Social media may have influenced the way people interact with long texts. As a result, readers may gravitate toward shorter stories or concise texts that are more compatible with platforms that limit attention span.
Speed of reaching the story: Contemporary readers may be attracted to short novels that present exciting and engaging stories within a shorter period of time, which suits the fast-paced lifestyle experienced by many people today.
- Changes in reading habits: With the development of social media and digital media, the short novel and flash fiction that can be read quickly and easily shared online may become more widespread.
- Shorter attention spans: With increasing distraction and the complexity of daily tasks, it may be difficult for some readers to commit to reading a long novel. The short novel may therefore be a good option for those seeking a complete and enjoyable reading experience in a short time, particularly those who do not prefer sitting for long periods to read.
- Saving time: Readers and consumers may have limited time to enjoy reading, making short texts more attractive to them.
The second hypothesis and question concerns why writers and authors attempt to reduce or condense narrative, fictional, and poetic texts. Several factors may play a role in this:
- The evolution of literary style: As literary styles evolve, there may be greater interest in experimentation and innovation in writing. Writers may attempt to present stories rich in meaning and emotion within shorter texts, such as the short novel, the short story, flash fiction, and other new creative forms. Some may turn to short stories or concise texts because they allow them to express ideas quickly and directly and to interact with current events and issues.
- Innovation and diversity: The short novel can offer diverse and innovative reading experiences more quickly than the long novel, allowing writers to express their ideas and stories in various ways without committing to developing a narrative over a long period.
- Cultural tastes and social developments: Changes in cultural tastes and social values may influence the popularity of a particular type of writing. In some cases, the short novel may address contemporary social issues more quickly and effectively.
- Innovation and creativity: Some writers seek to present new forms of literature or to renew existing styles and structures, sometimes by reducing or condensing the text.
- Artistic challenge: Writers may feel a desire to challenge themselves by presenting their ideas in innovative and concise forms, which may lead them to adopt shorter literary forms. Writing a good and short text at the same time is not easy. Writers may wish to challenge themselves by conveying a powerful message or story in a brief text, which requires high artistic skill.
- Changing reader interests: Readers’ interests may change over time, prompting authors to search for texts that correspond with readers’ concerns and interests in the era and stage in which they live.
- Accessibility and ease of publication: With the spread of online publishing platforms, it has become possible to publish short texts more quickly and easily, which may encourage writing in shorter literary forms.
These reasons may represent only part of the picture and cannot be generalized completely to the literary situation everywhere. Literature is a dynamic field influenced by many factors, and therefore a balance may remain between long and short works depending on circumstances and future developments.
It is not possible to define a specific period as the absolute age of the short novel or the short story, since literature passes through various stages and developments throughout history. Literature is usually influenced by social, cultural, and technological changes.
At certain times there may appear to be greater interest in the novel, while at other times the short story may become the main literary scene. This depends on several factors such as:
- Audience preferences
- Literary trends
- Cultural developments
In general, reducing or condensing texts can be considered a response to the cultural, social, and technological transformations of the present era, leading writers to search for new ways to communicate with readers and attract their attention.
It is not possible to predict with absolute precision the future developments of writing, literature, and the reading market. These developments may differ from place to place and from time to time. Nevertheless, there are certain factors that may influence the popularity of the short novel compared with the long novel.
In general, the short novel may have an increasing role in the world of writing and literature, and it may attract a diverse and varied readership. However, it is still important to recognize that the long novel has its own value and its audience that appreciates the depth of narration and the development of characters over a longer period of time.
